Peer Support Groups
Post 90 is host to two peer-to-peer veteran groups that meet at our Legion building each week.
This is part of our support of the Be The One Initiative.
To participate you do not have to be a member of The American Legion. Meetings are open to any veteran.
On Thursdays at 1:00 pm is the weekly daytime meeting Veterans for Veterans. See the Events Calendar for more details.
On Mondays, there are two simultaneous meetings at 6:30 pm. See the Events Calendar for more details.
A Veterans for Veterans meeting and a separate Spouse meeting.
While the veteran meeting takes place in the main room, the spouse peer group meets in the Auxiliary room. It was recognized that a spouse would have struggles, different from the veteran, but struggles nonetheless. By interacing with others that are dealing with similar difficulties, they receive benefits similar to those a veteran receives by talking with fellow spouses about life with a struggling veteran.
After leaving military service, some veterans feel as if they are missing the camaraderie that was once part of their daily life. Some veterans may continue to struggle with silent battles that they endured during military service.
No matter your struggles, you’re never alone in the company of other veterans. Most of the silent battles you have endured, so have other veterans who understand. Sometimes, civilian family members mean well, but they’re unable to offer the support that only other veterans can provide.
Benefits of a veteran support group include:
-
Knowing that you’re not alone in your struggles
-
Learning how to talk about your feelings and experiences with others
-
Meeting friends or mentors that can have a positive impact on your life
Meetings are usually at American Legion Post 90, 100 Rucker Lane, Statesboro, GA.
